About Cathrine

ABOUT THE TRAINER

More than 400 winners, Cathrine Erichsen is by far the most successful female trainer in Norwegian racing history. She was an amateur champion rider at age 16, when she won 11 races at Øvrevoll Galopp in what was only her second season. "My career as a trainer was a bit of a coincidence", she says, "I had been involed in racing since well before I rode as an amateur but my plan was to study economy, and I had taken my place at Bedriftsøkonomisk Institutt when trainer Knut Engan decided to retire. I was only 23 at the time and the temptation was too much when I was offered to take over - the stable had lots of really nice horses". Three four legged runners became very important in launching her career; Albaran,, Oktan and Mortens Prospectt. Albaran won both the Stockholm Cup International (G3) and the Scandinavian Open Championship (G3), while the classy sprinter Morten's Prospect captured Norsk Kriterium as a juvenile - when King Harald presented the prize. How fitting, that Cathrine now has Princess Märtha Louise involved in a new syndicate owning the colt Fifty Shares, bought in England in 2018.

Cathrine has saddled four Derby winners to date, three in Denmark; The Khamsin (2002), Mission Possible (2005) and Master Bloom (2018) - and one in Norway, the 2003 winner Lights Out. Master Bloom has also won the Scandinavian Open Championship (G3). Another highlight came when Cathrine trained Easy Road, ridden by William Buick,to success in the Rous Stakes (LR) at Ascot. He also won a big handicap at Doncaster. A remarkable feat for a horse trained in Scandinavia.

Master Bloom remains in training for 2020, and is one of the stable's most exciting horses these days - alongside the high class miler Duca di Como, about whom Cathrine says "I wonder how good he actually is". Duca di Como has captured the Polar Cup (G3), Swedish Open Mile (LR), Nicke's Memorial (LR) - a race he has won twice - and the Norwegian 2,000 Guineas.
